Sounds great isn't it? Well it is. And let me make it sounds even more interesting, you perform yourself as one of the vice presidents or even the president of the company, bursting out any ideas and innovations you could think of as long as you can defend it before the boards... and at the end of the day, you are considered passed 2 credits and get your grade accordingly. No more boring professors or sleepy students, any kind of foods and drinks are allowed and yet you can still going out from the class more often than regular class!!!
They call it a game, Management Game. But I'd prefer to call it as a small kinda party... But seriously, this is one of the compulsory courses that you have to take to get your MBA degree at Waseda University. So, along with those cheerful sounds of class going on, actually we took it seriously as if we were running a business.
So how's the game going? I'll tell you briefly later after I introduce our board of executives first:
This is Victor Torstensson, He's from Sweden, performed as the President of the company. The coolest president ever... never got pissed off, has a rich background at a business school before, a little bit serious guy but not as much as the vice president of accounting department :-). I mean, at least Victor speaks a lot more than HG does.
Now, this is HG, he's Korean. Perform as vice president of accounting department. Sharp counting, conservative budgeting and most important is less talking. Smiles a lot, but not when you sound your idea for making new plant(s) or disbursing some money for R&D expense and everything.
Meet Leigh D. Bates. A decent British entrepreneur which is now our vice president of production department. An excellent ideas listener, until comes up with his better second opinion. Conservative as well and never get rushed to enter bombarding new market with our products.
André Torsvik, very cool Norwegian youngster. Perform a very well decision maker as the vice president of Marketing Department. Along with his young ages (as well as the other executives), never expecting a passionate risk taking marketing style from him. He's the one that keep emphasizing other members to perform this company as a moderate company.
Aaah, what would you expect from this old Falk :-). A 34 stiff Indonesian governmental officer who knows nothing about business. A good bluffer though... but as a vice president of Personnel Department, that doesn't bring much helps.
Ok, now about the game itself. Well, generally we're doin' allright. Especially at the first term (day) of the game. with high orders for our products we can manage to build 4 plants based on market's demand. Entering the second term, there was a recession goin' on and we got a little bit of problem because we already built our fifth plan since the last period of first term, and by the time the last plant is ready, no market can absorb our excess products. We have to keep quite a lot of finished goods for the last periods, but thanks to a good teamwork, we can manage to keep our cash on its positive balance. We end up as the second or third best team of 8, I guess...
But above of all, we all are winner eventually. We found that those exhausting 2 days in a row was not as boring as it could've been. Spending 2 times10 hours of study in this class is unimaginable if we have never try it for ourselves. And the beauty of it, is that we can communicate well enough as a team, not bad for a newly met foreigners in a virtual multinational company. So keep the good work guys, may we all achieve our success at Waseda.... See you when I see you.
